Pure Joy | Yellow Inspiration | National Cathedral School | Washington DC Wedding Inspiration

I had the privilege of traveling to Washington DC for the Jeremy Chou Workshop there last August.  One of my favorite days was our shoot at the National Cathedral School - home of the Washington National Cathedral.

In the words of Elizabeth Gopal of East Made Event Company, "Yellow. An often underutilized color in fine art wedding design, yellow exudes joy, happiness, and cheer. Goethe wrote, “We find from experience that yellow excites a warm and agreeable impression… The eye is gladdened, the heart expanded and cheered, a glow seems at once to breathe toward us.” Coming from a desire to demonstrate how the boldest, sunniest color can be elegantly subdued, the inspiration for this bridal session was drawn from the blush tulle, rose gold sequins, and yellow appliqué flowers on an exceptionally designed Emily Riggs gown.

Paired with a second, equally detailed, white gown, the yellow color also shines in the floral arrangements by Sophie Felts and in the vintage glassware, originally owned by stylist Elizabeth’s great-grandmother. More minimal elements, like the invitation suite by Julie Ha and a vintage ostrich feather fan, balance the appliqué embellishment. Photographed in the newly renovated chapel and on the back lawn of the National Cathedral School in Washington, DC, the shoot mimics the bridal portrait elements of a real wedding day. Our bride is first posed in front of large windows for portraits, and later, gracefully swishes her gown on the lawn behind the impressive European-style architecture of the school. Dainty tablescape and dessert displays round out our details, ensuring that the overall design is “warm and agreeable” indeed. "

Bridal Portrait Session | Atlanta History Center | The Swan House

So excited that I can finally share these images with you all!

With only two weeks away from saying, "I do," we set out for the Swan House to photograph Catherine's bridal portrait session.  Southern Weddings explains that the history of the bridal portrait originated in Europe with families commissioning a bridal portrait painting to commemorate the special occasion. Back then, people didn't hire wedding photographers and photos were often taken before the wedding day.  Through the years, its trickled down and became a tradition of Southern Debutantes whose photo would be displayed at the wedding near the guest book and then hung in her parents' home.  Now, it's become a great way to have a hair and make up trial and be more comfortable in front of the camera before the big day in addition to being one more thing I love about the South.

Pink Coastal Bridal Inspiration | Beaufort, South Carolina

Last November, I went to Beaufort, SC and had Taylor Doehrman of Taylor Dawn join me for a couple shoots.  We did one at Anchorage 1770 then woke up super early the following morning for a sunrise beach session on the coast.  If you've ever thought about doing a morning after the wedding shoot, I'd highly suggest going someplace like this.   We found this quiet little sandy beach and it was the perfect dreamy spot.

Coastal Wedding Inspiration | Beaufort, SC | Anchorage 1770

This shoot really was a dream come true.  I'd wanted to plan my own styled shoot for awhile and when I decided go to Shanna Skidmore's Blueprint Retreat that took place in Beaufort, SC, the wheels started turning.  I mean, we were already going to be in this beautiful little seaside town.  Why not stay an extra day and try to pull together a shoot to do while I was there?

Taylor Doehrman of Taylor Dawn Design quickly came on board and the two of us started planning and recruiting.  Some amazing vendors pulled out all the stops for us to make this happen.

The warm, comforting air of the neighboring sea embraced the bride on her wedding day. Her dreamy wedding dress was quite at home in this ethereal coastal setting. Light and sweet, the bride’s graceful gown matched her gentle and kind spirit. The delicate lace in a modern silhouette demonstrated the romantic and eager love shared by the couple. As the bride wandered around the opulent Anchorage 1770, her sentimental gown was raptured in the sea breeze. Her deep blush, velvet heels helped complete her perfectly classic yet modern look. The perfect marriage of the pastels and deep plum flowers in her floral arrangement held together by the strong, slate, floor-length ribbons were wonderfully symbolic of the couples apparent love for one another: flattering sweet yet absolute. The bride and grooms wedding vows are safely housed in elegant vow books, each differing in style yet exquisitely coupled together.

The bride and groom's patient and comforting love was evident in each of the intricate details of their wedding. The whimsy of the antique calligraphy of their invitation suite well prepared guests for their idyllic reception. The perfectly set tables held white linen table cloths, tall candlesticks, and an Arcadian vase overflowing with a soft, light bouquet. The bride strolls barefoot for a moment alone on the docks to read her beloved’s final words as a single man. The boats eagerly awaiting voyage, at the brides back, were a lovey reminder of her own impending adventure. The bride strolls back, under the Spanish moss, to be united forever with her husband. - Words by Brooke Meaders

Allyson | Bridal Portrait Session | Clemson, South Carolina

Allyson had the sweet idea to have her Bridal portrait session at Clemson where she and Chase met!  We even went down to the exact seats inside the stadium where they met for the first time.  It was such a fun afternoon and now that Allyson and Chase have tied the knot, I can finally share the images with you all!

Chase didn't know this was where she was taking her photos so there were some sentimental surprises for him as well, like taking along the hat that his grandfather used to wear at every game as he cheered on the band entering the stadium at Gate 5.
